Three senior officers have been deployed at the Special Investigations Department headquarters, Kireka, as police chief Kale Kayihura seeks to reinforce its capacity.
The officers are Detective Superintendent of Police (D/SP) Charles Mutungi from the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID), Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Kanalo also from CIID, and Henry Mugumya, from Busoga East Regional CIID.
The enforcement to the SID, formerly the Special Investigations Unit, comes in the wake of investigations into charges of fraud, mishandling of cases and aiding escape of suspects. The probe covers more than 10 officers, including former Commandant Charles Kataratambi. Deputy Police Spokesperson Polly Namaye said the transfers, which took immediate effect, were announced yesterday afternoon by Kayihura.
Unlike most transfers where an officer is deployed to a department after another officer has been removed, no officer has been transferred from SID. The department is headed by the former Commissioner for Homicide at the CIID headquarters, Mark Odong. In the last month, it recorded an escape of five key suspects, including a Rwandan fugitive, Brigadier Robert Rutinywa.
Also transferred is ASP Aggrey Okumu Nyeko from the Directorate of Human Resource to Nakaseke police station as the officer in charge of the station.
